For millions of years, the Ponikvica creek ran over the plateau of the Ponikva karst, seeped through the calciferous ground and created a magical underground karstic cave in the middle of the Lower Savinja Valley. With a bit of imagination, an image of the Devil himself can be seen above the entrance. In the winter, when the external temperature is lower than the temperature in the cave, steam sometimes comes out of the entrance. That is why our ancestors used to be afraid of the cave and named it Pekel (Hell).
A well-protected path past numerous stalactite formations and side tunnels rises all the way towards the 4m high underground waterfall on the Peklenščica creek, which is also the highest underground waterfall in Slovenia. The stairs take us to the upper, dry part, which contains more stalactite formations. The visitor exits the cave through the artificially made exit 42 m higher.
